Life is a love song when you find the right notes

Maggie and Ibby make up a happy – if unconventional – family. After meeting at university, they now live in the village of Applecroft on the beautiful West Country coast.

Okay, so Ibby’s gay and prone to disastrous dates, while couples’ counsellor Maggie spends her days helping people with their relationship problems despite having no sex life of her own. Nevertheless, they’re devoted to bringing up teenage daughter Amelia – the result of a drunken one-night stand when they were students – in a stable and loving family.

Until a face from the past – in the form of hard-partying rock star Jordan Nash – disrupts their quiet lives. As Jordan struggles with his personal demons and old secrets are revealed, can Maggie and Ibby stay strong? Or will bringing back the past threaten all that they’ve built in the present?

A feel good, heart-warming novel about about first loves and second chances. Fans of Holly Martin, Dani Atkins and Heidi Swain will be captivated.

Lisa Swift is the pseudonym for bestselling women’s fiction novelist, Mary Jayne Baker.

review

This was my first British author in a long time, so it took a little while to pick up the writing style and lingo. Once I had gotten past the language I was absorbed into the story. There were many points in the story that had me second guessing the star rating I was going to be giving. At points the plot was a little too predictable and also hard to follow. I started making notes for myself on characters and things that had happened and this helped quite a bit as this took me a longer than normal to read.

The characters were super cute and relate-able. I found myself a fascinated with their little group of friends. Each character is unique and has their own set of quirks; the situations in which the story is even set it a new never seen before by myself. Maggie and Ibby are two best friends that took a situation that could have been super negative and turned it around and creating a very unique family setting; with Ibby a gay man and Maggie a straight women living together to raise their daughter in the same home. All the characters are well rounded and likable, even Amelia the 13 year old daughter; She was your typical boy obsessed young girl and the way she was able to adapt to anything thrown her way was amazing. I find it amazing when an author is able to write characters that react to situations in ways that usually wouldn’t happen and make it feel like that is the choice the character would have made in real life.

There was a small portion at the beginning of the book though that threw me off for a short time. When Jordan Nash (Celebrity) is introduced it felt like someone had mashed together 2 books. His parts were out of no where and had no foreseen connection to the rest of the story for a little bit. Once the connection was made though the story started flowing naturally.

Overall the story was very likable and I will definitely recommend it. This is a new release and I hope that you pick it up yourself. If you enjoy romance, LGBTQ or British humor this is the book for you.

A little quote that made me laugh out loud

“Oh my god,” she wailed.”My mom’s had sex with Jordan Nash!”- Amelia Nightengale-Ibbeston
